GAY Games IVAN
Track gold-medalist LINDA VILLAROSA captures the spirit of the past two Gamesand her hopes for the Big Apple.
Four years ago, driving out of Vancouver,
my three track-and-field medals clinking on the seat next to me, I was already feeling nostalgic for the warm and wonderful week I had had at Gay Games III. The radio was tuned to a co-op station, which was broadcasting the closing ceremonies, and all of a sudden I was startled to hear the gravely, distinctively New York voice of Karen Merbaum, a friend and the founding co-president of the organizing committee for Gay Games IV. Through the static I heard Karen bellow, "See everybody in the Big Apple in four years!"
The Gay Games in New York City? I didn't know how to react. Part of me was proud that my town would be host to this huge extravaganza, and that it would be big fun, because queer New Yorkers do know how to throw a party. But then as I watched Vancouver, settled against a beautiful wooded backdrop, grow smaller and smaller in the rearview mirror, I realized that Gay Games IV would be totally-and maybe terribly-different from any of the previous three Games.
